Shiva Purana
Mythological Tale
Yamasamharamuthi or Kalasamharamurthi literally translates to the vanquisher of Yama, god of death. The story commonly referred to as Markandeya Puranam tells the tale of Markandeya who was an ardent devotee of lord Shiva. Mrikandu father of Markandeya was given a boon by lord Shiva either to choose a virtous son short lived one or an evil yet long lived son. Mrikandu chose the former. Upon reaching 16 years of age Markandeya begins praying to lord Shiva but Yama arrives to take his soul. Markandeya clings to the Shiva linga as Yama flings the rope inorder to capture his soul. Enraged that Yama has come to take the life of his devotee Shiva appears in the fierce as Kalasamharamuthi and pierces his trident through Yama, killing him. This story suggests that god comes to the aid of people who are truly devoted to him. This is one of the rarest panels of Kalasamharamurthi found in Kerala Mural style.
