Kerala murals are living cultural expressions embedded within temple spaces and community contexts. The archive recognises that these works are not isolated art objects but part of ongoing ritual, architectural, and social practices.
We acknowledge the custodianship of those whose roles sustain and preserve these murals in their original contexts:
Temple authorities and trusts across Kerala, whose governing frameworks regulate access, documentation, and reproduction of these works.
The local communities in whose lived spaces these murals exist — as devotional objects, cultural memory, and architectural presence.
Traditional practitioners and artisans who carry the technical and devotional knowledge of the mural tradition — and who make its continuation possible.
Photography & Documentation
All documentation has been carried out with sensitivity to site-specific regulations and permissions. In cases where permissions were required, they have been obtained to the extent possible at the time of documentation.
Restrictions on photography at individual sites have been observed and noted where relevant within each entry.
Spatial and ritual boundaries governing access within temple precincts have been respected throughout fieldwork.
Local protocols governing access and documentation have been followed in consultation with site authorities and community representatives.
